Countdown to Gothia 2013

In line with our recent National and International adventures with some of our football and futsal teams across our busy programme, the attention nowdownload turns to our girls who are off to Sweden on Sunday 14th July to compete in the Gothia Cup.

This year’s competition, held in Gothenburg between 14th-2oth July, sees Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust take our Under 15’s and Under 19’s Girls Centre for Football Excellence teams, who have both been working hard in the build up to the much talked about event within Men’s and Women’s youth football.

Both sets of girls have been involved in gruelling training sessions and matches in the run in to the tournament, which has seen them prepare physically, mentally and tactically for what to expect in Sweden, against top women’s teams from all around the world. On Sunday 7th July saw our Under 15’s play Portsmouth as part of the build up and ran out 4-1 winners in scorching sunshine at Swindon Academy. It was great preparation for the tournament as Portsmouth are a strong team but goals from Amy Bains, Jess Graham, Kiyane Byrom and Jordan O’Donoghue impressed the STFiTC coaches.

Jon Holloway, STFiTC Trust Manager, said “This is the biggest and best youth competition in the world and it’s an experience the players will remember for the rest of their lives. Our girls, together with our coaching team, are all excited and looking forward to a fantastic week of playing against high quality women’s teams. We hope to do Swindon Town proud.”
