STFITC Gothia Cup 2013 Update

U15's Gothia 2013The Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust Girls have made a fantastic start in the international tournament ; ‘The Gothia Cup’. This year’s competition, held in Gothenburg between 14th-20th July, sees Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust take our Under 15′s and Under 19′s Girls Centre for Football Excellence teams, who have both been working extremely hard in preparation for this tournament. Both sets of girls have involved in training sessions and matches in the run in to the tournament, which has seen them prepare physically, mentally and tactically. The training and preparation certainly helped with the encouraging start that both teams produced on the first day.

The Under 19’s started the tournament by having an early kick off against ‘Fristad GolF’ a Swedish team with the outcome of a draw (0-0). The team’s efforts certainly weren’t reflected in the end result having dominated the second half, just being unable to score. We would like to wish Amy Cottrell a very speedy recovery having unfortunately experienced a very bad injury.

The Under 15’s then started their group stages taking on another Swedish side called ‘IFK Nyokoping’ in a particularly fast paced and thrilling game. ‘IFK Nyokoping’ started extremely well leading 1-0 in the first minute of the game. Amy Jolliffe responded by scoring a fantastic side footed goal to put Swindon back level (1 -1). The home side retook thUnder 19's Gothia 2013e lead and with time quickly passing, Ffion Williams scored a phenomenal goal in the dying minutes of the game to put the score line level. The Under 19’s were particularly instrumental constantly cheering and encouraging the girls to a well-deserved draw.

Tuesday saw the Under 19’s play against a very strong team called KIF Orebreo DFF who we have tipped to go a long way in this year’s Gothia Cup. You can follow their progress on the official Gothia website,en/division/1748216. The Under 19’s battled extremely well and we were pleased with their overall commitment but they were eventually beaten 4-0. Unfortunately Amy Baker narrowly missed scoring with the great free kick that hit the bar.

The Under 15’s played against Swedish ‘Lira BK 1’ in their second game and played very well. They went 1-0 up within the first few minutes from a strong volley by Ffion Williams. We then scored again to make it 2-0 with Elisha Grainger scoring a fantastic goal chipping the opposing goalkeeper. The third goal was scored by an Amy Bains free kick before the STFC Girls extended their score line with Karolyn Byrom’s sheer determination to score the third goal.  Lira BK 1 were awarded a penalty in the last 10 minutes of the game and which they scored to make the final score 4-1.

Both teams are due to play in the final group stages tomorrow and we would like to wish them the best of luck. The Under 15’s are currently sitting top of the table after winning and drawing both of their games. The Under 19’s have drew and lost their two games and are hoping for a successful win tomorrow to finish the group stages in second place.
